(Berlin, 20th November 2009) Deutsche Bahn announced today that for the first time in its history it had won a tender for local rail transport in another European country. The Group’s local transport subsidiary, DB Regio Sverige, has won the competition to operate commuter train routes in the Swedish province of Ostergötland. The tender covers the operation of 3.3 million train kilometers per year as of December 2010, and 3.8 million train kilometers at a later date. The contract runs for ten years with an option to be extended for an additional four years.
The contract covers operation of rail routes, onboard service and maintenance. The required 18 vehicles will be provided by the Swedish contracting organizations, ÖstgötaTrafiken and Jönköpings Länstrafik.
DB Regio has also been active in Great Britain since 2008 with its British subsidiary, Chiltern Railways. In addition to commuter trains between London and Birmingham, Deutsche Bahn also operates commuter-like routes in the peripheral areas of London as well as direct connections between London, and the Wales center of Wrexham and the county of Shropshire.
Deutsche Bahn already scored a previous success with it efforts to win a tender for local bus service in another European country when DB Stadtverkehr’s Danish subsidiary, Pan Bus, won the Sydtrafik 2 tender for bus service in the Esbjerg transport region in early 2009.
