Annual General Meeting of DB AG approves € 2.675 billion capital increase

Start of implementation of the € 11 billion package from the Climate Action Program and partial compensation of Covid-19-related damages at DB Long-Distance

(Berlin, Nov 5, 2021) Today the extraordinary Annual General Meeting of Deutsche Bahn AG (DB AG) has approved a capital increase at DB AG amounting to a total of  € 2.675 billion after conclusion of the talks with the European Commission regarding the planned measures to strengthen rail transport as part of the Climate Action Program 2030, which was adopted by the German Federal Government in Autumn 2019. This includes € 2.125 billion from the Climate Action Program 2030 for the years 2020 and 2021 as well as € 550 million for the partial compensation of Covid-19-related damages at DB Long-Distance in the period March to June 2020 as approved by the European Commission on August 10, 2021. The payment of the funds by the Federal Government will follow in a timely manner after today’s approval.    

Based on the Federal Government’s Climate Action Program 2030, additional Federal funds amounting to € 11 billion will be made available by 2030 to strengthen the rail system. At the end of January 2020, the Federal Ministry of Finance (Bundesministerium der Finanzen; BMF) and the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (Bundesministerium für Verkehr und digitale Infrastruktur; BMVI), as well as DB AG, DB Netz AG, DB Station&Service AG and DB Energie GmbH, have agreed on the inflow and use of the funds in a joint letter of intent. The funds will be used exclusively for infrastructure; half of it will be paid as equity and half as construction grants to DB Netz AG and DB Station&Service AG. In terms of content, the funds will be used in the categories of robust network, digital rail, attractive stations and economically self-reliant (not yet supported) infrastructure measures.
